the business

clarient partnered with frais to create a simpler way to manage expenses. as management moved from receipts and spreadsheets to digital experiences, users expected faster entry, visibility and control.

the opportunity was to rethink expense management around behavior, helping users record spending with less effort while giving them ways to understand budgets, track expenses and make decisions.

clarient approach

clarient led the experience from research and product definition through interaction design, visual design and brand construction. we studied users, competitors and market expectations to identify friction across existing expense management journeys and define opportunities for a more flexible product.

the work brought together ux strategy, information architecture, interface design and voice interaction to create a consistent experience across web and mobile, supported by a scalable visual system and a distinct product brand designed for growth and differentiation at scale.

the friction

digital expense management had not eliminated the friction of managing expenses. employees still had to capture receipts, remember transaction details, check policy limits and submit claims, while finance teams faced delayed entries, incomplete records and limited visibility.

existing tools often focused on recording transactions rather than helping users understand spending. Frais needed an experience that simplified everyday expense management while giving organizations clearer oversight, timely information and more actionable insight.

the shift

clarient approached the product as an experience transformation, bringing research, information architecture and interaction design together to simplify how expenses are recorded, understood and managed every day.

make expense entry easier

users could quickly add expenses while capturing details such as merchant, location, category and date. a simpler onboarding flow helped them get started without unnecessary steps.

turn spending into insight

budget estimates, alerts and visual reports helped users understand spending patterns by category, month or day, making financial information easier to act on.

make expense management more flexible

a “shoebox” approach let users capture receipts, store them and process them later. support for 150+ currencies and 70+ languages made the experience adaptable across markets and user contexts.

the outcome

the result was an expense management experience designed around how people actually manage money: capture it when it happens, understand it when it matters, and act on it with confidence.

users could quickly record expenses, capture receipts for later processing, set budgets and receive alerts without being forced through complex workflows. visual insights made spending patterns easier to understand across categories, days and months, helping users spot changes before they became problems.

for organizations, the platform created greater visibility into expense activity, spending patterns and policy limits. support for 150+ currencies and 70+ languages extended the experience across markets, while consistent web and mobile experiences made expense management accessible wherever work happened.

clarient brought together product thinking, experience design and technology to make a traditionally administrative workflow more intuitive, flexible and actionable.

the bigger shift was from recording expenses to understanding spending. that is where we create value: turning complex financial workflows into experiences that are easier to use, easier to scale and more useful to the decisions people need to make.
